Updated Standings July 28, 2008

The standings have been updated for the Monday and Tuesday night leagues, but not Thursday night. I’m missing all the scores from that league from 7/24 except for Nazarene vs. SRBC. That’s the only score I do have. If you haven’t reported a score from that night yet please do so ASAP. For the next couple weeks please try to get your scores in immediately as they may have playoff implications and I want to make sure I get the playoff info out to qualifying teams as soon as I can.
For more playoff info please refer to this post.
Restrooms July 22, 2008

I have had a few emails and other comments about the restrooms not being unlocked during game times. They actually have been unlocked along with the gates to the fields by the field prep folks, but unfortunately the type of lock that is on the restroom door is causing the problem. Its a push-button and twist style lock and if it is the wrong position it will remain locked even after the door closes. This leads to it being locked from the inside when no one actually is inside. I’ve brought this up with the church maintenance staff, so hopefully they will be able to get a different kind of lock on there before too long.
In the meantime, I’ll be sending an email to all the coaches to ask their players to make sure the door is unlocked before leaving the restroom. If it still appears like it will lock, turn the button the other way and turn the door handle to pop the lock out. I hope this makes sense. I’m trying to describe it the best I can from memory. I realize this is not the best solution, but for the time being, before a different lock can be installed its the best I can do. lf you’re reading this, please share the information with as many people who may attend games as you can. My apologies for the inconvenience.

My apologies if the baselines are a little more crooked than usual this week. My regularly scheduled chalk jocky is on vacation and his role is being ably filled by your friendly neighborhood commissioner. Ok, “ably” might be a stretch. In the interest of my time I confess that I am not using the string. I also must confess that when I was the official SRBC softball chalk jocky when I was 13 I certainly didn’t dream I would still be doing it at 30. So, if you lose a game this week due to a slow roller up the third baseline that was foul then fair then foul then fair again, you can blame it on me.

Standings & Playoffs July 8, 2008

I know I’ve fallen behind in updating the standings which is partially due to some missing scores, and partially due to my own schedule. But, I make a vow to you now that I will have the standings updated (at least with the scores I have received to that point) by the weekend and I will strive to stay more on top of things. Especially since the standings will have ramifications for the playoffs!
A quick run down on how the playoffs will work. Just as in previous years the top four teams in each of the coed and rec leagues will qualify for the playoffs. All competitive league teams qualify for the playoffs. Unlike in years past, there will be no additional fee for playoff participation. The umpires are already scheduled and the equipment already purchased. So that’s nice.
The format:
For the coed league, the top four teams will be seeded based on won-loss record and will compete in a single elimination tournament. The first round will be on Monday, August 11th with the winners advancing to the championship game on Thursday, August 14th.
The rec league tournament works the exact same way as the coed league tournament, including the game dates. Its necessary, as it was the last couple years, to have both leagues play on both Monday night and Thursday night because of the way the fields and umpires need to be scheduled. I’m posting all this information a full month ahead of time so that teams will have time inform all their players and to make any necessary arrangements.
For the Tuesday competitive league, all six teams will qualify for the playoffs and will be seeded according to won-loss record. The format will be announced in detail at a later date, but it will be a kind of quasi-double elimination tournament with a loser’s bracket hybrid thing. Like I said, details to come. The first round will be played August 5th, and the second will be August 12th.
For qualifying teams with identical records, the first tie-breaker is head-to-head record in the regular season, the second tie-breaker is runs scored, and the third tie-breaker is runs allowed. If by some miracle a fourth tie-breaker is necessary, I’ll flip a coin.
There will be more details about the playoffs in the coming weeks, but that is most of the important stuff. Good luck for the rest of the season and try not to melt in this heat!
